What to do with amaryllis after the winter bloom?
I really enjoy amaryllis blooms. However, I have a room full of tropical plants I must bring in, give away or kill each year. I have hardy amaryllis, Crinum, Belladonna and each year I resolve to be strong and not purchase another plant I will have to bring in the house in the winter. My downfall is the elegance and exotic looks of those tender plants that make me believe my home could indeed be festive and charming with the addition of this one plant. Fortunately, I have found homes for each of these beauties (even the waxed ones) every spring. I clean them up in late winter, repot, lightly feed and wait for the leaves to appear. I then trade these plants for good will with coworkers – they are happily unaware this is a used gift and they are saving the life of an unassuming beauty. DD
